Aurora, Illinois – Retired Illinois Supreme Court Justice John Nickels has endorsed Aurora attorney Fred Morelli for Circuit Court Judge in the 16th Judicial Circuit. The 16th circuit is comprised of all of Kane, Kendall and DeKalb counties. Morelli will seek the Republican nomination in the primary election February 2, 2010.

“I am humbled to receive this endorsement from Justice Nickels,” Morelli said. “His distinguished 30-year legal and judicial career is an example for all of us who aspire to attain the pinnacle in our profession. I consider him a colleague, a mentor and a very special friend.”

Nickels presided over cases that Morelli tried while Nickels was on the trial bench and also cases that Morelli argued while Nickels served on the Illinois Supreme Court and 2nd District Appellate Court.

“It was a pleasure to have appeared in his courtroom during those periods of his career,” said Morelli, who also had cases against Nickels before Nickels became a judge.

Prior to his years of judicial experience, Justice Nickels practiced law in Kane County for more than 20 years. Justice Nickels currently lives on a farm in Maple Park where he maintains an active interest in the law in addition to managing the family farm with his son.

As associate judge, he heard cases ranging from traffic and criminal to family law and civil trials. He began practicing law in Aurora in 1967, and has worked as an Assistant State’s Attorney and a public defender. After not seeking retention as an associate judge in 1981, he started private practice in Aurora.

“I am a steadfast believer in the Constitution of the United States and the protection it affords us all,” he added. “The judicial system needs to represent fairness, respect and civility among lawyers and litigants. For these reasons, I am running for the position of circuit judge.”
